5 Tips for Finding a Divorce Attorney

By Parkaman on January 22, 2021 0

If you are looking for a wonderful divorce attorney who is an expert that knows the law, cares about clients, and does everything to achieve the best results, you should know that they are available and in plenty. The key is to know how to find such since having the right one on your team is likely to make a significant difference.

So, how exactly do you do that? If, like many women, it is your first encounter with the law, you probably don’t even know how to go about finding an attorney, let alone hiring one.

  1. Referrals from Multiple Sources

The best people to ask for referrals for divorce attorneys are other attorneys, professionals in the world of finance such as financial advisors, CPAs, etc., and other women that have gone through divorce. Ask multiple people to get multiple names. If just one name keeps coming up, however, that’s actually a good sign. Another thing that many people often don’t think about is that instead of just asking these people for recommendations, you should also ask who not to use. If you want to learn more, then talk to the professionals.

  1. Consult Multiple Attorneys

Consulting multiple lawyers can be rather costly if the attorneys charge a consultation fee, but it is worth consulting with not less than 2 attorneys. Get a feel for each one’s approach, style, and strategy. Check out the lawyer’s office as well as how helpful their receptionist is. You will find that the differences will be obvious.

  1. Interview, Don’t Just Be Interviewed

Lawyers are always amazed when they receive emails from strangers with the subject line “I Would Like to Hire You!” It might be flattering, but the person sending such an email doesn’t really know the lawyer and has probably just heard about them.

You might be surprised to learn that the best attorneys don’t always take every case that comes along their way – they first interview potential clients before deciding whether or not to take the case. Some actually use a rating scale of A to F.

Keep in mind that you are a top-notch client, and you need to do the same thing. One of the best ways for you to do that is to take a list of questions with you, such as how much experience they have, how they are likely to handle your specific situation, and whether they will be involved in the day-to-day of the case, etc.

  1. Do a Gut Check

The relationship between an attorney and their client is just that, a relationship. It needs to feel like a good one to you. You will probably be spending a lot of time with this individual, so ensure that you are okay doing that. Most importantly, you should trust them to guide you in all the critical decisions that you will have to make. If something doesn’t feel right in your gut – even if you are unable to articulate exactly what that is- move on.

  1. Hire an Attorney You Can Afford to Keep Until the End

Divorce is expensive usa and so are divorce attorneys. But just how much they cost will depend on where you live, how experience the attorney is, and sometimes just how fancy their office is. You need to be sure that you can afford the attorney you hire, not just to get you started, but to see you across the finish line. If you are scraping funds just to pay the initial retainer, it is highly likely that you cannot afford the monthly bills that come after the initial retainer runs out.
