How To Reduce The Risk Of Having A Vehicle Accident?

Vehicular accidents are common nowadays because of the increasing number of private drivers and more affordable cars. Driving your own car is a basic necessity, helping you keep up with the fast-paced working environment, and as a safety measure in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that about 20 and 50 million people suffer from non-fatal injuries, and 1.35 million people die because of vehicular accidents. This fact shows the importance of finding ways to reduce the risk of figuring in one, which will be discussed in detail below.

Always Wear Seat Belt

Your seat belt is your best defense against aggressive, distracted, and impaired drivers. Keep yourself safe and secure inside your car by buckling up your seat belt at all times. It will prevent your body from being ejected from your vehicle when an accident arises, which can sometimes be deadly.

Not wearing a seat belt would result in other costly ramifications if you’re involved in a vehicle accident. Some states allow insurance for drivers not wearing seat belts and who are partially responsible for their injuries, reducing their total settlement. Also, they need to pay substantial medical costs on their own.

Men’s hand fastens the seat belt of the car. Close your car seat belt while sitting inside the car before driving and take a safe journey. Closeup shot of male driver fastens seat belt.

Reduce your risk of getting hurt in a vehicular accident by wearing your seat belt at all times. It will also ensure that you’re fully compensated for your injuries in case of an accident, covering damages and protecting you from liabilities.

Indeed, a car accident can be physically, mentally, and financially stressful. If you or a loved one was involved in a vehicular accident, it is advisable to contact a car accident attorney Michigan, if you live within the area.

Limit Passengers

Every additional passenger increases your risk of encountering a fatal crash. For a new driver, limiting the number of passengers is highly recommended.

Limit Night Driving

When you drive at night, there’s a higher chance of encountering drunk drivers along the road. Night driving takes more effort than daytime driving. Limiting night driving also helps reduce your risk of experiencing a car accident.

But, if you can’t help driving at nighttime, it’s essential to check the following tips:

  • Headlight Control: An hour before sunset, make sure to turn the headlights on. This way, you’ll easily see and can easily be seen by other drivers in the dark. Avoid using high beams when you’re behind or approaching another vehicle.
  • Clean Headlights: Improve night driving visibility by checking and cleaning the headlights regularly.
  • Avoid Distractions: It’s challenging to drive in the dark, so limit distractions. Avoid using your phone or listening to loud music.
  • Speed Control: Slow down when driving at night so you’ll have more time to assess and react to road dangers. Keeping a safe distance from surrounding vehicles will enable you to stop safely if anything comes along the way, such as a deer running across the street.
  • Stay Alert: Check all mirrors to know the blind spots and rapid movements. Avoid taking a heavy meal to avoid drowsiness before driving. Stop by a hospital if you need to take a break, which is the safest area for a stopover.

Choose A Car With High Safety Ratings

When buying a new car, choose one with high safety ratings. As much as possible, avoid driving trucks, small cars, and sports utility vehicles (SUVs). The same is true when buying used or secondhand cars. Make sure that the following vehicle safety features are still working and intact:

  • Anti-Lock Brakes
  • Airbags
  • Convex rear-view mirror
  • Overspeed warning devices
  • High strength automotive glass
  • Seatbelts
  • Jack safety
  • Stability Control Systems

Develop The Right Driving Attitude

Drive responsibly by practicing the right attitude. Respect other drivers and always stay calm regardless of the situation. Here are some good-to-know tips to help you develop the right driving attitude:

  • Don’t tailgate other vehicles.
  • Don’t be in a hurry to overtake other vehicles. The road is meant to be shared by all motorists, so take your time and respect others’ right to pass.
  • Use your car mirrors and be aware of where other vehicles are. Always scan the road for possible hazards.
  • Consider the driving conditions and not merely rely on the posted speed limits.

Conclusion

You can reduce the risk of figuring in a vehicular accident by applying the tips shared above. Ensure that you’re wearing your seatbelt every time you drive, and remind your passengers to do the same. Limit nighttime driving and the number of passengers to reduce the risk of a fatal car crash.
